The problem is, it’s a little dark. I gave her a couple of old hand-me-down brass lamps –they lit the room just fine, but looked a little sad amongst her other funky décor. Jessica is a fashion school grad and works in the industry, so esthetics are especially important to my creative girl. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8DVahzPZzT0/TrIsbgwc6HI/AAAAAAAAAPo/GhCg77d4LSM/s1600-h/DSCN3487%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3487" alt="DSCN3487" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-WbZAJuWqzGk/TrIsccei2-I/AAAAAAAAAPw/I7OF_Xj4_S8/DSCN3487_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="540" width="406" /></a></p> <p>Here is the before shot of the lamps. Not much to look at, but very well-made. By the way, I built that workbench complete with peg board. By myself. And those are my tools, not Brad’s. I have my own air compressor and nail gun too. :)</p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-TJsYNexRlPk/TrIsdHBK_CI/AAAAAAAAAP4/OBu4Y7LVepo/s1600-h/DSCN3490%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3490" alt="DSCN3490" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-muVsOhAqTtE/TrIseKmKDCI/AAAAAAAAAQA/09m5aQngoTI/DSCN3490_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="542" width="408" /></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-HuF_sIpbtZ0/TrIsf4lAawI/AAAAAAAAAQI/hzbzyY6KksQ/s1600-h/DSCN3489%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3489" alt="DSCN3489" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Nkfimt3plGI/TrIsgRgeE-I/AAAAAAAAAQQ/95VzHcocqn0/DSCN3489_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="428" width="570" /></a></p> <p>Be sure to cover the areas you don’t want to paint. For lamps, I find that the plastic grocery sacks work best along with a little painter’s tape. Also, be sure that your surface is clean and dry before painting. </p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3CEoAyJRgXw/TrIshTIeE4I/AAAAAAAAAQY/1JC0EEa3bO4/s1600-h/DSCN3498%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3498" alt="DSCN3498" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-F_fXIIIrj9Y/TrIsiNIEJHI/AAAAAAAAAQg/L_oDDnpc6do/DSCN3498_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="310" width="412" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-0NENUGfkQTs/TrIsjDioC1I/AAAAAAAAAQo/YivhmFLafEQ/s1600-h/DSCN3499%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3499" alt="DSCN3499" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-__b0cQnJXKo/TrIsjn2UtkI/AAAAAAAAAQw/kRprQ0VG07w/DSCN3499_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="308" width="410" /></a></p> <p>While my paint was drying, I covered the shade. I used craft paper to draw my template by rolling the shade and tracing along the edge. </p> <p>I then sprayed the shade with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Aleenes-Fast-Tacky-Spray-10-Ounces/dp/B002NHDAZ0">Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Spray</a>. Be sure to cover the entire outside surface of the shade.</p> <p>I covered the outside rims of the shade with black bias tape and snipped the inside tape so that it would fit snugly in a circle. I should have taken pictures, but I forgot. Sorry. Please email me with any questions. I’ll try to scrounge up another shade and do a tutorial. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-lQwuYiYjMj0/TrIskYzd6_I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/SQbF7eIw3g4/s1600-h/DSCN3507%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3507" alt="DSCN3507" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aC6kfXKhtqg/TrIslAfloiI/AAAAAAAAARA/yoC0I_9BNkk/DSCN3507_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="546" width="410" /></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-mu1qqEcXpmY/TrIslzAMULI/AAAAAAAAARI/QYIoO46tI8k/s1600-h/DSCN3510%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3510" alt="DSCN3510" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-H1On08y56Zo/TrIsmpcv46I/AAAAAAAAARM/12ol9askIqY/DSCN3510_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="546" width="411" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-RKvjyKj0X-s/TrIsnUWwyZI/AAAAAAAAARY/jVCv8-8KrwI/s1600-h/DSCN3511%25255B16%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3511" alt="DSCN3511" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3-cH3oWOFz8/TrIsoh5rUQI/AAAAAAAAARg/I-4b8hJl8yE/DSCN3511_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="539" width="405" /></a></p> <blockquote> <p>I used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-249123-Painters-Multi-Purpose-12-Ounce/dp/B002BWOS6M">Rustoleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Spraypaint in Gloss Berry Pink.</a> I am in love with the results, and more importantly, so is Jessica!</p></blockquote><br /><img src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" /><br />I'm linking with... <a href="http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/" target="_blank"><img style="width: 165px; height: 146px;" alt="shabby creek cottage" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/tightwadtips/SCCTTBadge.png" border="0" height="189" width="201" /></a></div>Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-39444323903968255532011-11-01T11:25:00.000-07:002011-11-01T11:27:47.202-07:00I'm Back<span style="font-family: arial;">I've been MIA for a bit, but now I'm back. Do you ever have those times in your life where there are literally not enough hours to get everything accomplished? The past couple of weeks have been that way for me. Something had to give, and unfortunately it was blogging. I will try my best not to do that again. Check back tomorrow for some fabulous how-to posts and maybe a recipe or two.</span><br /><br /><img src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" />Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-55577511083101798872011-10-20T09:33:00.001-07:002011-10-20T09:45:16.558-07:00Sugar Free Day 14<span style="font-family: arial;">It's been 2 whole weeks since I last tasted sugar! The first week was pretty rough - headaches, tired, irritable. It was like an entire week of PMS. The second week - so much better! <br /><br />I have more energy than I've had in years and I'm going to bed at night with that "good kind of tired" feeling; not exhausted because my body feels like it's failing me, tired because I am accomplishing so much during the day.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The second huge change is in my head. I was really beginning to think that I had adult ADD-seriously; I just couldn't focus and seemed to move from one project to the next without completing a thing. It was driving me nuts. The fuzzy feeling in my brain is gone. I am so on task, it's almost ridiculous.<br /><br />So, I know I said that I am not going to have sugar until Christmas, but I've changed my mind. I am going to have a piece of pie on Thanksgiving, because I make a really, really good apple pie. But will I have a second piece after everyone leaves? No. Will I have another the following morning with my coffee? I will not. Because I really like the way I'm feeling. </span><img src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" />Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-82797676276395772542011-10-18T05:00:00.000-07:002011-10-18T05:00:02.441-07:00Mantle Reveal<p>I pretty much love my mantle.  The pics just don’t do it justice; it is really, really hard to get a good picture when a mirror is the backdrop!    The wreath has a nice antiquey feel, thanks to the coffee staining.  Thanks again to <a href="http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/">Gina at The Shabby Creek Cottage</a> for the great idea!  Check it out…</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wA8bzfQD4Vk/Tpdr4iobDsI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/mFVt9tbqxUI/s1600-h/DSCN3348%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3348" border="0" alt="DSCN3348" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-HuK2SfEjx14/Tpdr5T1hd8I/AAAAAAAAAPU/VOqeiJt_Lp4/DSCN3348_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="755" height="568" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-IgxV1zxVgsE/Tpdr69uo1cI/AAAAAAAAAPY/E18Smol46fg/s1600-h/DSCN3403%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3403" border="0" alt="DSCN3403" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-9cIgUi33CrM/Tpdr7hx_1TI/AAAAAAAAAPc/_sm4ZW93bWs/DSCN3403_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="757" height="569" /></a></p> <p>and yes, that is a ceiling fan with GOLD trim in the background.  We are in the process of updating our 20-year-old home with all new fixtures. It’s a pricey endeavor.  Look for posts on the updates in the near future!</p> <p>What are your fall decorating projects?</p> <br /><img src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" />Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-80529819250035447832011-10-17T05:00:00.000-07:002011-10-17T09:43:37.533-07:00Black Shutter Backdrop<p>I found these great shutters at a garage sale last weekend for only $3 bucks!  Don’t you love it when that happens?!  I thought they would make the perfect addition to my <a href="http://cuckooface.blogspot.com/2011/10/boring-mantle-rescue.html">boring mantle</a>, but the color was all wrong.  Great for shabby chic, wrong for Fall mantle.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-IUVAFu6uRdg/TpZTevJNMjI/AAAAAAAAAL0/821DdjhnPbQ/s1600-h/DSCN3333%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3333" border="0" alt="DSCN3333" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-oy-uky5gvo0/TpZTfBLZgTI/AAAAAAAAAL8/WpUynWc2b04/DSCN3333_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="413" height="549" /></a></p> <p>So, of course I decided to spray paint them.  I used <a href="http://krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_paint/">Krylon Indoor/Outdoor #51602 in Flat Black</a>. I love <a href="http://krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_paint/">Krylon</a> paints, they have great coverage and their sprayers never clog!  I sound like a commercial, but seriously, I love their products. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-D-_Gy1FTH3I/Tpdnzpdn9CI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/wsJaIMExP1Q/s1600-h/DSCN3395%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; When the temps reach 100 plus degrees, they are one of the few plants still standing. I recently sent a bunch of succulent clippings to <a href="http://www.gussysews.com/">Maggie</a> over at <a href="http://www.gussysews.com/">Gussy Sews</a>. I hope she’s ready; I went a little nuts with the clippers. While in my garden, I thought it would be nice to snap a few pictures of my favorites and share them with you. I don’t know all of the names, but I love them all!</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-FqcPtCSInJ4/TpZJ_2Pze_I/AAAAAAAAAIE/VR5ajBTdV44/s1600-h/DSCN3325%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3325" alt="DSCN3325" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-vzgCvttlcxo/TpZKAHGyQWI/AAAAAAAAAIM/1P7ycauItiw/DSCN3325_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="382" width="288" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-g62W3rax73Y/TpZKAwRDjLI/AAAAAAAAAIU/Ka5jxqkNNj4/s1600-h/DSCN3322%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3322" alt="DSCN3322" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-kd2Law-knbQ/TpZKBcvjHJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/Ta2AG5GMEIc/DSCN3322_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="381" width="287" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-UsYS5X9C__Q/TpZKCjUfTrI/AAAAAAAAAIk/3d5dhlc8StI/s1600-h/DSCN3323%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img style="border: 0px currentColor; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;" title="DSCN3323" alt="DSCN3323" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Dx3RUUEbyW0/TpZKDB9vyFI/AAAAAAAAAIs/s_T25TLNh88/DSCN3323_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="380" width="505" /></a></p> <p>I tried for several summers to grow strawberries in this pot, but they always cooked. It just isn’t the fall splendor that I’m looking for. I found these stacked pumpkins at a craft fair. I thought they were perfect until I got them home and realized they were way too bright-orange for my décor. The putty colored pot didn’t do a thing for them either. So, I decided to modify a bit. Check it out…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--meNE2adv5Y/TpZPtwUh4fI/AAAAAAAAAK0/erp2pFP9FsQ/s1600-h/DSCN3310%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3310" alt="DSCN3310" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-V8lQDsqsa4Q/TpZPuYas9JI/AAAAAAAAAK8/S6kPv5sbyD0/DSCN3310_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="500" width="376" /></a></p> <p>Before…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-JCuHMAd6A9Y/TpZPvMVTxgI/AAAAAAAAALE/cCqpg7Mjgx0/s1600-h/DSCN3311%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3311" alt="DSCN3311" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-SFx8A0aURaI/TpZPvoaGepI/AAAAAAAAALM/fpdFDJAJ5TY/DSCN3311_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="372" width="495" /></a></p> <p>I brushed each pumkin with Mod Podge. You could easily use watered-down white glue, but I like Mod Podge because it’s already the perfect consistency for brushing.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-7kJ2tyKaV2k/TpZPwZhdO5I/AAAAAAAAALU/h3RGFSRBqPw/s1600-h/DSCN3313%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3313" alt="DSCN3313" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-bN0RAw86MRQ/TpZPw8WbCNI/AAAAAAAAALc/6GqDKQB9LZw/DSCN3313_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="414" width="551" /></a></p> <p>Next I sprinkled it with glitter. I love <a href="http://shop.marthastewart.com/search.htm?keyword=glitter">Martha Stewart glitters</a>! They come in the coolest colors and are super-fine texture. This color is <a href="http://shop.marthastewart.com/Martha-Stewart-Large-Glitter-Fire-Opal/A/B002BTUCA6.htm">Fire Opal</a>, the stem is <a href="http://shop.marthastewart.com/Martha-Stewart-24Vial-Glitter-MultiPack/A/B002BTWI62.htm">Peridot.</a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-DkI7_UPwjaE/TpZPxaKdgqI/AAAAAAAAALk/1U6mxckhwlw/s1600-h/DSCN3328%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3328" alt="DSCN3328" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-bb4Q0i5mriU/TpZPxyh-AxI/AAAAAAAAALs/5jZXt4Li9mU/DSCN3328_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="587" width="442" /></a></p> <p>Voila! The finished product is exactly what I wanted. I spray painted the pot using <a href="http://krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_paint/">Krylon Flat Black Indoor/Outdoor #51602.</a> </p> <p>I’ll show it to you on my mantle in the next day or so. What surprises me the most is how often I was gravitating towards sugar. I’ve stopped myself several times from grabbing something sweet. I walked in the house and without even a thought, reached for a cookie from the cookie jar. Now I’m not talking about sitting down with a couple of cookies and a glass of milk and savoring the experience. I’m talking about mindlessly going to the cookie jar and grabbing a cookie – just out of habit, or boredom, whatever. It’s been very eye-opening. I can honestly say that I feel better. I can also say that I still want something sweet. Every. Day. But not as much as I did on the first day, so it is getting better. And my headache is finally gone. I’ll let you know how my week progresses. Please feel free to comment; I'd love to hear from you!<br /></p> <img style="width: 125px; height: 86px;" src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" />Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-1232471264683042732011-10-07T05:00:00.000-07:002011-10-07T05:00:08.500-07:00Sugar Free–Day One<div><p>I’ve decided that it’s time to get serious –seriously. I wake up thinking about my weight, I go to bed lamenting about my weight. Whether you have five or fifty unwanted pounds, I know you get it. I think Oprah said it best: “after all these years, I can’t believe I’m still talking about this.” “This”, of course, being her weight. One of the richest and most powerful women in the world, and even she can’t get a grip. </p> <p>Why am I blogging about this? I’m really not sure. It’s a deeply personal battle – one that has been going on for most of my adult life. I don’t think I’ve ever been comfortable with my body. It’s sad – I look at old pictures and want to scream at my young self “why are you wearing that baggy sweatshirt?!” If I had that body now, I promise I would appreciate it more. Really. </p> <p>I’ve been on Weight Watcher’s since March and I’ve lost 19 lbs. I know, “great job!” Um, did you hear me? I said since <u>March</u>. That’s 8 months! I should be at my goal, but like Oprah, I’m still talking about it. The thing is, I know it works so I’m going to stick with it. And I’m actually going to follow the plan – every day. I’ve also come realize that sugar is a huge trigger for me. No, I’m not sitting around eating cake all day, but I do like some sort of sweet at some point during most days. The thing is, it tastes good but it almost always makes me feel crappy. And it makes me want more. So, I’ve decided to eliminate sugar from my diet until Christmas. I’m normally not a fan of any sort of deprivation, but I think this will be good for me. Call it a sugar detox.</p> <p>Today was my first no-sugar day. I have a screamin’ headache, but I will not cave. I have the Def Leppard song “Pour Some Sugar on Me” stuck in my head. Coincidence? I think not.</p> <p>So, if you’d like, you can follow me on my journey. Comment if you’d like, or not. I will post as the need arises and keep you updated on my quest. Wish me luck and say a prayer! </p><br /><br /><img src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/cuckooface/blog%20design/angela.png" height="77" width="133" /></div>Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-55809707161167748622011-10-07T04:00:00.000-07:002011-10-07T04:00:16.462-07:00Boring Mantle Rescue?<p>I came across this awesome garland idea from <a href="http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/2011/10/31-days-book-page-garland.html">Gina at The Shabby Creek Cottage</a>. If you haven’t seen her, then you are missing out! She is crazy-creative!!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-iweBP8XebyA/Tozy0sBNVeI/AAAAAAAAAH8/iL4pIU8O0UQ/s1600-h/image%25255B3%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9vd6jWzy9WI/Tozy1zmOczI/AAAAAAAAAIA/KWUpdvENdTA/image_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" border="0" height="341" width="562" /></a></p> <p>She made this garland from book pages that she coffee-stained and stapled together. I love this! How do you think it will look on my (currently) boring mantle? I think I’ll give it a whirl. Thanks for the idea <a href="http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/2011/10/31-days-book-page-garland.html">Gina</a>!</p>Cuckoofacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14273761373664837161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2925872688496327878.post-20503587218199700992011-10-06T03:00:00.000-07:002011-10-06T03:00:00.798-07:00“Fall” in Love<p>Fall is by far my favorite season. I love the cooler weather, the turning leaves, fall decorations, soup on the stove, fire in the fireplace – I love it all. Check out my dining room table centerpiece. My friend Joy made it for me; she is a true talent! </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-jZbUjGD_phI/TozrcR_oEbI/AAAAAAAAAHk/KSbYY4KdLrY/s1600-h/DSCN3277%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSCN3277" alt="DSCN3277" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LsAG1_Pcky8/TozrdEUHwGI/AAAAAAAAAHo/D7oIew1U7ks/DSCN3277_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="364" width="467" /></a></p> <p>I think my mantle needs a little help. What do you think? I dig the center floral, but I think I need something running along the length of the mantle. Check out the sugar pinecones in the bottom right. I am an avid reader and definitely got my love of books from my parents. My mom saved a lot of my books from when I was a kid, so I was lucky enough to share them with my children, and now with you!<br /></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DSKkjIMB6Hc/TmkM_EztZII/AAAAAAAAAEw/T7mSbRT8Wq8/s1600/DSCN3183.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DSKkjIMB6Hc/TmkM_EztZII/AAAAAAAAAEw/T7mSbRT8Wq8/s320/DSCN3183.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5650061485274915970" border="0" /></a>What was your favorite book when you were a kid? <br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UB9sN142zV8/Tl2a9S1gCXI/AAAAAAAAACA/F9z6BUEpTbk/s1600/fabric.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UB9sN142zV8/Tl2a9S1gCXI/AAAAAAAAACA/F9z6BUEpTbk/s320/fabric.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646839885611403634" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>I love the cute celery sweating in the sun and the potato with a shovel. I had no idea what I was going to make with it. It came on a three yard mini bolt, so I had some options. I try to be eco-friendly whenever I can, and really didn't like the fact that I had to use plastic bags to get fruit and veggies at the store, so I decided to whip up some produce bags.
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DO8fr0I81n0/Tl2a9dWQb8I/AAAAAAAAACI/pXoVb3O3K7c/s1600/fabric1.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DO8fr0I81n0/Tl2a9dWQb8I/AAAAAAAAACI/pXoVb3O3K7c/s320/fabric1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646839888433147842" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />I cut the fabric to 14" x 17" and then started making my drawstring bag. I used a french seam for these. I don't always use a french seam but wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any stray fabric threads inside the bag. If you had a serger, that could probably work instead. If you are unfamiliar with a french seam, you take your two fabric pieces with the wrong sides together and sew your side/bottoms seams. My seam allowance for the first seam was about 1/4".
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g_W83bn0TbE/Tl2a9bloZZI/AAAAAAAAACQ/RmVqaACTjnE/s1600/fabric2.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g_W83bn0TbE/Tl2a9bloZZI/AAAAAAAAACQ/RmVqaACTjnE/s320/fabric2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646839887960761746" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Clip your corners and turn the bag inside out. It helps to iron your seam to the side before turning inside out. Iron the bag with your seams at the very edge.
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VM1qtcgcENg/Tl2a9kT7_ZI/AAAAAAAAACY/i9zGF78Gn-Q/s1600/fabric3.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VM1qtcgcENg/Tl2a9kT7_ZI/AAAAAAAAACY/i9zGF78Gn-Q/s320/fabric3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646839890302467474" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Your fabric print should now be on the inside of the bag. Sew around the side and bottom seams once more using a 1/4" or 1/2" seam allowance. Make sure to include the seam edgings you just created in step 1. This is the french seam on the inside of the bag! No stray threads and a nice finished seam!
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lHC1igCeEZU/Tl2a9_DmCrI/AAAAAAAAACg/1a5BGoDoPPM/s1600/fabric4.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lHC1igCeEZU/Tl2a9_DmCrI/AAAAAAAAACg/1a5BGoDoPPM/s320/fabric4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646839897481677490" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Now for the top casing; I folded over the top edge about 1/2" and ironed all the way around.
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c53o3tC0lPs/Tl2dVnRvOzI/AAAAAAAAACo/X1HYUBquO4E/s1600/fabric5.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c53o3tC0lPs/Tl2dVnRvOzI/AAAAAAAAACo/X1HYUBquO4E/s320/fabric5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646842502438665010" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Then I folded that over another 1".
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W6Wk1S_kNSg/Tl2dVqoOpkI/AAAAAAAAACw/_YJmVuEHxWQ/s1600/fabric6.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W6Wk1S_kNSg/Tl2dVqoOpkI/AAAAAAAAACw/_YJmVuEHxWQ/s320/fabric6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646842503338305090" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />This size would depend on the width of the drawstring you were using. I bought a bulk lot of ric- rac and seam binding on Ebay years ago, and although I have gone through a lot of it, I still had quite a few things I just didn't think I would use. I had some seam binding tape and thought it would be perfect. It is very lightweight, and I thought it would hold up just fine. I also used some single fold bias tape ( I normally use double fold for my projects), that I just sewed a zig zag stitch down the center of to keep the seams together.
<br />
<br />I wanted to make a buttonhole for my drawstring to go through, so I folded up the casing I just ironed a bit and marked where I would need the buttonhole to start, and sewed it up. Remember to only sew through one layer of fabric, do not sew through the casing you just folded down. Then I cut the buttonhole open and re-ironed my casing down.
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1z7lTK5kOS0/Tl2dV-bKBtI/AAAAAAAAADA/iIHu9nrJt-o/s1600/fabric8.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1z7lTK5kOS0/Tl2dV-bKBtI/AAAAAAAAADA/iIHu9nrJt-o/s320/fabric8.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646842508652185298" border="0" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0BT41ufHMsc/Tl2dV9qOcwI/AAAAAAAAAC4/TwozmbhJrXU/s1600/fabric7.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0BT41ufHMsc/Tl2dV9qOcwI/AAAAAAAAAC4/TwozmbhJrXU/s320/fabric7.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646842508446954242" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Once the buttonhole is done and your casing is ironed down, sew along the very bottom edge of the casing to close it up.
<br />

<br /></div>
<br />Then feed the drawstring through, tie a knot in the end and you are done!

<br /></div>
<br />While the bags may add a minimal amount of weight to produce at a store that sells by weight, these are actually really light. I used them at Trader Joe's, which sells by piece and the farmers market and got rave reviews! People really loved the idea. I use reusable grocery bags, why not reusable produce bags too?! :)
<br />
<br />This was my very first tutorial, so please let me know if you see this and have any questions!

The generous size is perfect to use as a purse, but large enough to throw your towel and a book in and head to the beach.
<br />
<br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; CLEAR: both" class="separator"><a style="MARGIN-LEFT: 1em; MARGIN-RIGHT: 1em" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3A_0IRQsFBI/TgEzcATwwuI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/K3-PsA04vj8/s1600/DSCN2709.JPG"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3A_0IRQsFBI/TgEzcATwwuI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/K3-PsA04vj8/s320/DSCN2709.JPG" border="0" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />The pattern is<a href="http://katicupcakequiltingco.blogspot.com/"> My Favorite Bag by Kati Cupcake</a>. I used fabric from <a href="http://katicupcakequiltingco.blogspot.com/">Amy Hamberlin</a> from her <a href="http://katicupcakequiltingco.blogspot.com/">Marabella </a>line. The fabric colors are positively scrumptious.

<br />This tote bag has 6 pockets on the outside and six on the inside. The inside lining is the same as the outside fabric. The bag closes with a convenient magnetic snap. <br />
<br />I have to admit- I love this purse more than any other purse I've ever made! I want to keep it for myself, but then that sort of defeats the purpose of having an <a href="http://www.cuckooface.etsy.com/">Etsy shop</a>. Just so you know, it was very hard for me to part with this fabric.
<br />
<br />The pattern is Down Town from <a href="http://http//katicupcakequiltingco.blogspot.com/">Kati Cupcake</a> (Love her!). The fabric is by Sanae for Moda in their Oh MY! collection and is absolutely TO.DIE.FOR. The colors are chocolate brown, burnt orange, hot pink, cherry red, olive green, golden yellow, & a hint of white in the outline. The bag is fully lined with a large and small pocket in the interior and a magnetic closure. The handles are dark brown rattan and complement the fabric perfectly. The outside pocket is a generous size as well. The decorative buttons on the pocket give it the ultimate finishing touch! This is the perfect bag for all seasons!
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UKWez-s-muY/Tl2micu_EmI/AAAAAAAAADw/dKduhGEmAw8/s1600/1"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UKWez-s-muY/Tl2micu_EmI/AAAAAAAAADw/dKduhGEmAw8/s320/1" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646852618551497314" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />Here's a view of the back of the purse. I want you to be able to admire all of it's loveliness.
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDnvM_FAYX8/Tl2mijgyiQI/AAAAAAAAAD4/oIzq12Kow7k/s1600/2"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDnvM_FAYX8/Tl2mijgyiQI/AAAAAAAAAD4/oIzq12Kow7k/s320/2" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646852620371003650" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />I think these rattan handles are the perfect accent for this purse. They go well with the tropical theme of the fabric, don't you agree?
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3LM-_NfB998/Tl2mirI15dI/AAAAAAAAAEA/HpIJNIsdsfA/s1600/3"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3LM-_NfB998/Tl2mirI15dI/AAAAAAAAAEA/HpIJNIsdsfA/s320/3" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646852622418044370" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div>
<br />I know, I love the buttons too... probably even more than you do.
<br />

<br /></div>
<br />The interior is super fun,not to mention functional. Check out the pocket and magnetic closure.

I have stacks and stacks of fabric in my sewing room. Someday soon, I'll show them to you {smile}!<br /><br />If I’m in a new city, the first thing I do is map the nearest quilt shops – much to my husband’s dismay. I think quilt shops are the best place to buy unique, high quality fabrics. My new favorite shop is in Morro Bay, CA. Good thing it’s about 6 hours from my house, or I would be in serious trouble!<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thecottonball.com/"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oexW6g5yzVQ/Tl2hpR0W-zI/AAAAAAAAADg/jIEEpiqCahI/s320/Cotton%2BBall%2BMorro%2BBay1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646847238322191154" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thecottonball.com/"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v-QXIbahQtc/Tl2hpCGyLXI/AAAAAAAAADY/idluTWH5A-Y/s320/Cotton%2BBall%2BMorro%2BBay%2B2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646847234104503666" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></div>On a recent trip to Spokane, WA, I discovered a great new shop called SewEZ Too. Today finally marks the day for our first blog post Blogging has been a little intimidating to us thus far; what do we write about, should our first post be a tutorial, how do we start? Too many questions indeed. So here goes, I am just going to jump in!
<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Pq3M1zhddo/TlxNpt2a-gI/AAAAAAAAABY/lNkn84aainU/s1600/ang%2B%2526%2Bme.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Pq3M1zhddo/TlxNpt2a-gI/AAAAAAAAABY/lNkn84aainU/s320/ang%2B%2526%2Bme.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646473411893590530" border="0" /></a>
<br /></div><a href="http://www.cuckooface.etsy.com/">Cuckooface</a> is made up of Stephanie (myself) and Angela, two sisters that love to sew and craft. We started this together about a year ago and have decided we really want to grow our little business. We have an<a href="http://www.cuckooface.etsy.com/"> Etsy stor</a>e also named<a href="http://www.cuckooface.etsy.com/"> Cuckooface</a>.
<br />
<br />I have two young boys, 5 and 10 years old and find that most of my sewing is my girly outlet. I use lots of pinks and flowers and ruffles, and the occasional pirate print. Angela has two grown children, one 18 year old son and a 22 year old daughter.
<br />
<br />We hope you enjoy our little creative space, look for lots of fun things to come!
